The first Trans Am, which arrived midyear in 1969 as the WS4 option package. The WS4 Trans Am package cost $725 over a base V8 Firebird (coupe or convertible) and included the 400-cu.-in. 335-hp Ram Air III B8, 3.55:1 Safet-T-Trak rear axle, heavy-duty suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars, power front disc brakes, variable ratio power steering with three-spoke wood-grain wheel, a unique hood with functional scoops, functional front fender vents, a big rear wing and assorted other trim items. The amazing Ram Air IV was optional.
Pontiac had to pay the SCCA a royalty for each Trans Am it sold. The one-choice paint scheme probably hurt sales appeal, and Pontiac built just 697 of this landmark model. We can thank Pontiac for sticking to its guns for three decades, and giving us this great car.
